I loved the idea of Bon Appetit’s Food Lovers cleanse, but I had a hard time sticking to the strictly scheduled two week menu. Plus – there was not enough provision made for leftovers! If you are going to take the time to make all these wonderful dishes, you are not going to want to trash the leftovers just to stick to the meal plan! I worked my way through the plan more slowly, allowing for leftovers. When not eating a meal from the plan, like when I needed a quick dinner or when dining out – I followed the general guidelines. The more intensive two week plan can be found HERE.
On the whole, I really appreciated the reminder of how good I feel when I eat whole grains, lean meats or seafood, seasonal fruits and veggies, and good fats. I am not sure how “detoxified” I feel, but I do feel like I have eaten thoughtfully and responsibly by making whole and seasonal choices.
I DID miss caffeine, and I have to admit that I went back to having my morning cup of espresso in the beginning of week 2. I mean COME ON – It’s one shot of espresso!
In case you are interested, my favorite recipes from the cleanse are listed below (in no particular order) – try one today!
Avocado Tartain (Per Bon Appetit – slice an avocado then mash with a fork. Sprinkle with salt, red pepper flakes, and a squirt of fresh lemon or lime juice. Spread onto whole grain toast) – This is AMAZING, very satisfying (and a great way to use up avocados!).
Tuscan Kale Chips – A GREAT way to use all that Kale you got in your CSA basket 🙂
Rye Crackers with Smoked Salmon and Yogurt mixed with Red Onions and Chives – Yogurt was a tad onion-ey for breakfast at work, but I would totally do it again, a very nice departure from the standard options.
Celery Root and Apple Salad – I am obsessed. I love the crunch and freshness of this. It also kept remarkably well in the fridge – Just keep the dressing on the side until you are ready to eat!
